CS2 trade hold and Trade Protection explained
CS2 trade hold vs Trade Protection: why Steam holds trades up to 15 days, how the 7-day protection works and how to avoid delays when buying skins.
How it works
Pick your skin
Choose the skin, its condition and StatTrak™ if you want it, and paste your Steam trade URL. The price is locked when you create the order.
Pay with crypto
Send the exact amount to the address we show you. We detect the payment on the blockchain by ourselves.
Accept the trade
Once your payment confirms we send the skin to your Steam account with a trade offer. Accept it and it is yours.
A CS2 trade hold is a delay Steam adds before a trade completes, and Trade Protection is the 7-day window after an item lands in your inventory during which it can't be traded or sold and the trade can still be reversed. Both are Valve rules, not store rules, and both are easy to plan around once you know what triggers them. This guide explains each one in plain terms and what it means when you buy a skin here.
Two different things: trade hold vs Trade Protection
People often mix the two up because both feel like “waiting”. They work at different moments of the trade:
| Rule | When it applies | How long | What you can do meanwhile |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trade hold (escrow) | Before the trade finishes, if your account lacks a 7-day-old Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator | Up to 15 days | Nothing: the item is held by Steam and hasn't reached you yet |
| Trade Protection | After the trade finishes, on items received by trade in CS2 (since July 2025) | 7 days | Equip and play with the item; you can't trade it or list it on the Steam Market |
| Security restrictions | After a password change, account recovery or login from a new device | Temporary, varies | Trading may be blocked until the restriction ends |
The classic trade hold and how to avoid it
Steam wants every trade confirmed on a phone that has been linked to the account for a while. If the Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator hasn't been active on your account for at least 7 days, incoming and outgoing trades can be held for up to 15 days before the items move. During that time the trade sits in limbo and neither side has the item.
The fix is simple and worth doing even before you shop:
- Install the official Steam app on your phone and sign in.
- Open the Steam Guard section and add the authenticator to your account.
- Keep it active and wait 7 days without removing it.
- After that, trades are confirmed in the app instantly, with no hold.
Removing the authenticator, switching phones carelessly or resetting your account can restart the clock, so treat the app as part of your account rather than a one-off setup.
Trade Protection in CS2: the 7-day window
Since July 2025 Valve applies Trade Protection to CS2 items received through trades. For 7 days after the item arrives, it is protected: you can't pass it on to someone else or sell it on the Steam Market, and the trade can be reversed from Steam during that window. Once the 7 days are up, the item is fully yours with no strings attached.
In practice this changes very little if you are buying a skin to use. You can equip it straight away and play matches with it. The only thing you can't do is flip it within the first week. If your plan is to resell quickly, factor the 7 days into your timing. If you want a deeper look at how resale value is judged, our guide on how to price check CS2 skins covers it.
Why Valve added it
The stated aim is to make scams and account takeovers harder to profit from. A stolen item that can't be moved for a week, and whose trade can be undone, is far less attractive to someone who hijacked an account. For honest buyers it is mostly a short waiting period on resale.
Other things that can block a trade
- Password change or account recovery. Steam can restrict trading for a while after either one. Avoid changing your password right before you expect a trade.
- A new device. Logging in from a new computer or phone can also trigger a temporary restriction.
- A private inventory. Not a hold as such, but a public inventory is recommended so trades go through smoothly.
- An old trade URL. If you generated a new trade link, the old one stops working. Use the current one. Here's how to find your Steam trade URL.
What this means when you buy here
Buying on SoleBCN needs no account, only your Steam trade URL. Once your crypto payment is confirmed, we send you a Steam trade offer, which according to the site normally takes less than an hour. Your order page then shows “Offer sent!” with a button that opens your Steam trade offers. You accept it and confirm in the Steam app with Steam Guard.
Here is how the Steam rules fit into that flow:
- If your authenticator has been active for 7 days or more, the trade completes as soon as you confirm it on your phone.
- If it hasn't, Steam itself may hold the trade for up to 15 days. Setting up the app a week before your purchase avoids this.
- After the skin arrives, Trade Protection applies for 7 days: you can use it in game, but not trade or sell it until the window closes.
None of this affects the price you pay or the payment itself. The euro price is converted to your chosen coin and fixed for 30 minutes, and the payment is detected on the blockchain automatically. The full flow is described in how to buy CS2 skins with crypto.
A quick checklist before you buy
- Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator active for at least 7 days.
- No recent password change, account recovery or new-device login.
- Inventory set to public.
- Your current trade URL copied and ready to paste.
- Accept that a newly received skin can't be resold for 7 days.
With that sorted, browsing is the fun part. Start with knives or rifles, and if you are unsure about anything after paying, the support chat on the site can look up your order by its 8-character number.
FAQ
Can I play with a skin while it is under Trade Protection?
Yes. Protection only stops trading and Steam Market listings for 7 days. You can equip the item and use it in matches from the moment it arrives.
Does SoleBCN decide the 7-day protection or the 15-day hold?
No. Both are Steam rules applied by Valve. The store sends the trade offer; Steam decides whether a hold or protection period applies to your account and the item.
How do I know if my account will get a trade hold?
Check how long the Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator has been on your account. If it has been active for fewer than 7 days, or you recently reset your password or logged in from a new device, a delay is likely.
